It's now 20 years since Porto lifted the Champions League trophy under José Mourinho's management, and while the Portuguese side have failed to replicate that success ever since, they're still capable of holding their own against the best in Europe. The only games they lost in the group stage were against table-toppers Barcelona, who only finished ahead of Sérgio Conceição's side on goal difference.

Arsenal stormed through Group B to set up this two-legged knockout tie, finishing four points clear of second-placed PSV. The Gunners haven't gone beyond the last 16 of the Champions League since they reached the quarter-finals under Arsène Wenger in 2010. The team they beat to reach that stage? FC Porto, with a 6-2 aggregate win after going down 2-1 away from home.

The Gunners mark their return to the knockout stages of the European top flight nearly seven years later, as Mikel Arteta's men cruised through as Group B leaders.

Meanwhile, the Portuguese side are looking to make it past the last-16 stage in Europe for the fourth consecutive time after qualifying from Group H alongside Barcelona.

Porto boss Sergio Conceicao was served with a fresh injury concern in Sunday's 2-0 league win against Estrela, as left-back Zaidu Sanusi was forced off with an ACL injury.

With the Nigerian possibly ruled out for the rest of the season, apart from Ivan Marcano suffering from a ACL injury of his own, Jorge Sanchez should join veteran Portuguese defender Pepe at the back against Arsenal.

Having missed the Estrela game, Stephen Eustaquio is a doubtful starter. So, Alan Varela is likely to feature in the middle once again, with Mehdi Taremi and Evanilson leading the attack.

Jurrien Timber has been included Arteta's squad for the UCL knockouts despite still recovering from an ACL injury, while Thomas Partey and Fabio Vieira are ruled out due to their respective setbacks.

Back from an ankle problem to make the bench in the 5-0 league win over Burnley at the weekend, Emile Smith Rowe would remain a doubt alongside Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Mikel Arteta's side claimed their fifth successive Premier League win with a 5-0 thrashing over Burnley on Saturday. Prior to that, London rivals West Ham were also on the receiving end of a thrashng, being beaten 6-0.

Their Portuguese opponents meanwhile, have had a mixed season so far and sit third, seven points from rivals Benfica and Sporting. Sergio Conceicao's team have struggled in front of goal, scoring just 37 goals - in comparison to Benfica (52) and Sporting (60).

The Gunners returned to Europe's top table this term after several years away and topped their group to ensure safe passage into the knockout stages. They only lost one of their six group games and are fancied to see off their Portuguese opponents.

Mikel Arteta will take charge of a Champions League knockout game as a manager for the first time with Arsenal looking to end a last-16 hoodoo in the competition that has plagued them for years. The north Londoners by no means have an illustrious history in the competition, reaching just one final.

This year the Champions League will conclude at Wembley, which would be a short trip for those at the Emirates. Arteta insists that destination is huge motivation and isn't concerned by the club's previous record at this stage of the competition.

The Spaniard said: "It’s great we have earned the right to be here. It’s been seven years since we’ve been at this table for this kind of match and 14 years since we’ve been able to go to the next stage. That’s the challenge, that’s what is ahead of us and we are really excited to face it, and to go for it with full belief, that’s for sure."

Porto are regulars at this stage of the competition and came through a group that also included Barcelona, Shakhtar Donetsk and Royal Antwerp. They currently sit third in the Portuguese league - seven points off leaders Sporting Lisbon.

Arteta also added: "We know how tricky it is. We’ve been two or three months out of the competition and now we are going to face a really different stage of it. All the teams are very, very tough, we have little time to prepare the games, and the ball is rolling. You have to be very ready because ethe teams are very prepared and very dangerous.

Arteta's injury list is unchanged ahead of the trip to Portugal with Takehiro Tomiyasu and Gabriel Jesus not quite ready to return for the visitors. However, Thomas Partey and Fabio Vieira have returned to team training this week and could be in line to feature in the squad, although it seems unlikely they will be rushed back.

Porto head coach Sergio Conceicao was dealt a blow when striker Mehdi Taremi suffered a thigh problem at the weekend, meaning he is a doubt. Zaidu Sanusi is out for the season, while Ivan Marcano is also set to miss out through a long-term ACL injury.

Arsenal go into this game on the back of five successive Premier League wins with just two goals conceded by Arteta's title chasers. Porto are off the pace in the Portuguese title race with the hosts winning one of their last three league clashes.

Barcelona, AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Bayern Munich (again), Monaco, Barcelona (again) and Bayern Munich (again again) were the victors in Arsenal’s previous trips to the first knockout round - contributing to a painful run which haunted Arsene Wenger’s latter years at the club.

However, in the year before that curse kicked off, it was Porto who the north Londoners met at this very stage.

Despite a 2-1 defeat in Portugal, Nicklas Bendtner scored a hat-trick at the Emirates to seal a five-goal reverse and send Arsenal into the quarter-finals.

Arteta will be desperate to repeat such heroics this season to end not only his personal struggles in knockout football, but an unhappy knack that has dogged the club for well over a decade.

Canadian midfielder Stephen Eustaquio is a key doubt for the hosts, who had already lost defenders Zaidu Sanusi and Ivan Marcano to serious knee injuries this term.

Arsenal hope to welcome Gabriel Jesus and Takehiro Tomiyasu back from short spells on the sidelines. Fabio Vieira has travelled with the squad after returning to training on Tuesday. Thomas Partey, though, remained in London.
